If someone had asked the man in the street a few years ago if there was room for Apple and Android, he may have wondered what on earth that person was talking about. Now, most of us know it's about two very hot smartphones that have been pitched against one another in the mobile phone arena. However, it should be noted that there are 3 other smartphone platforms also performing well in the US, too, but of the 5, it seems that Apple and Android are the ones on everybody's lips! It's all great hype for the two companies! Maybe they are pitched against one another because, as some claim, they are so very different -like comparing Apples and Oranges? The question is- is there room for Apple and Android?
Some say that Apple and Android are so very different that it is ridiculous to even try to compare the two. But they are both competing for your mighty dollar in the smartphone shopping basket. Some say that Android is leading the way and Apple has fallen by the wayside. It depends who you're reading and on what day you're reading it. What we do know is that it is a very exciting time to watch the smartphone develop and where it is going seems limitless in its possibilities.
Apple most definitely has a fan base which is loyal to the Apple brand. It has a fantastic Apps store with 300,000+ Apps and that number is expected to hit a half million sometime this year. It has so far launched 4 versions of the iPhone in 4 years but many critics say is its restrictiveness is what will ultimately lead to its downfall. That may change with recent announcements that Apple's iPhone is officially coming to Verizon Wireless. Reporters say that this decision will lead to the entire mobile ecosystem feeling the ripple effects.
Does it have to be Apple or Android or is there room for two? The more competitors in the smartphone market, the more investment we are likely to see by these two respective companies and a faster rate of development of goods and services is likely to follow. Good competition is favorable for the humble consumer and it usually leads to competitive pricing which will allow more people to afford smartphones.
I would suggest that the stakes are high for both Apple and Android and ultimately there is room for each of them because they do have enough differences to offer the choice consumers demand. Does there have to be a winner? If so, then let the winner be the smartphone user like you or I. This debate between Apple and Android is certainly of interest to those in the Mobile Marketing industry who closely watch the smartphone trends as it relates to their target audiences and demographics.
