I Love Ubuntu - And Here Are the Reasons Why

I have to tell you, the more I run Ubuntu, the more I love it.

Now, this is from a guy who has run too many OSes to count. I've used every single version of Windows, from 3.11 to Windows 7. I've dabbled in Mac OS, fro the mid-90's to today. I've tried them all, and I just find Ubuntu spectacular.

Why? Am I just a rebel? Some guy who just likes to feel superior? Nope. Ubuntu just works for me. The sound works, when I plug in my USB headset. The browser works perfectly. My wife logs in, and used my Ubuntu laptop without incident, the first time.

That, my friends, is why I love Ubuntu. On the rare occasion that a program freezes, all I have to do is open the console, check the process number, and kill it. It ends instantly. It doesn't ask if I want to help improve Ubuntu by reporting the crash. It doesn't try to fix the problem, while tying up my system ram and processor for an eternity. It just does what I tell it to do.

Ubuntu does what you tell it to do. Need an application? Tell it to download. Want to mess with your configuration files? Ubuntu figures you are an adult, and can deal with the consequences of your actions. It doesn't ask me whether I am sure 1000 times. It just does what you tell it to do.

I appreciate the fact that the machine is cognisant that it is a machine, and should be inclined to obey the owner. I love the choices that Ubuntu offers, as well. If I want a different window manager, all I have to do is download a new one. If I think that a feature is unnecessary, I can delete it.

Ubuntu (and Linux in general) offers you the freedom to make mistakes, and choose a different path. MAC and Windows don't allow me that option.

Now, there are a few things that people seem to really hate about Linux, but to be fair, many of them are the same things that people dislike about MACs:

1. Generally, Linux is not considered a gaming system. This is gradually changing, as independent developers continue to produce content, and broaden their purchasing base. Penny Arcade has released their latest game, at launch for the Linux OS. Like anything in the free market, the greater the purchasing base, the greater the chance that the game gets made.

2. Linux Driver Support: People consistently complain about Linux driver support, or a lack of support for their peripherals. With the latest release of Ubuntu, this practically became a non-issue. The only thing that I have to manually configure has been my built-in laptop webcam. I haven't done it, simply because I don't use it that often. That may be a deal-breaker for some. Other than that, driver support continues to improve, and in many cases, exceed Window's quality of support, with each release.

3. Sound - Hey, Linux has buggy sound. Ummm..not so much anymore. While the Pulse Audio server has created a few issues, the bugs continue to decrease with every passing day. Now, I have, in the past, found it annoying when Pulse didn't integrate properly with my apps, and I had to uninstall and add ALSA base, back in. That, too me, would be a dealbreaker if I was the average Windows user. As things stand, I'm willing to wait it out.

Is the future bright for Ubuntu? I think it is. In fact, I think Linux adoption rates will rise in the near future, thanks to the iPad. Why? Because Steve Jobs has demanded that HTML5 video support be made available for the iPad. Linux users are big on standards, and as more and more web apps are developed in HTML5, it really won't matter what OS you run.

Currently, Adobe has improved application usage for Ubuntu, via the AIR platform, and flash in general. AIR runs flawlessly on Ubuntu. Flash is buggy on Linux, and often suffers from frame rate issues, and general video bugginess. HTML5 will not have that problem.

Eventually, all of the problems people have with Linux will be solved via the delivery of applications via the web, or a cross-platform software API that is more robust than AIR. Games will be delivered simultaneously to all platforms at once.

This is when Ubuntu adoption will go through the stratosphere, as it becomes apparent that linux doesn't demand as many resources, as MAC and Windows do. Applications will be fast and secure, and we will see people move to open source software in droves.

In the meantime, I will continue to love and support the development of Linux and Ubuntu, even if it doesn't get the respect that I feel it does.

As a video production company, we often hear the phrase, 'we'll fix it in post' or 'we'll take care of that during the edit'. That may be fine and good, but there's only so much you can achieve, even with digital video editing. For one, if the shot isn't there, you can't manufacture it during the edit. Also, there's very little you can do to help a bad shot that you originally wanted in your final video production.

Since this article is meant to help rather than discourage, here are some ways that video editing can save the day:

The most important thing you can do is to take the time to get the shot you need! That may seem like common sense, but to quote Mark Twain, 'Common sense isn't very common'. The point is that if it requires you an extra take or two to get the scene shot the way you need it to be during production, take the extra time to do it. The edited shot will look more natural with the other footage and it will probably save you time and possibly money in the long run, unless you're editing it yourself and you don't care how much time it takes. But as a video production company, we're on a tight schedule. The Chicago production company market, for example, is very competitive and the companies who work fast and good are most successful.

With that being said, there are things that can be done to salvage your video production, even if the perfect shot isn't there, depending on what the problem is that you're trying to solve.

Audio

It's always good to record ambient audio in the environment you're shooting in. You may need it as background to the new audio you record. Say someone flubs a word on camera and you need to try to replace it. Ideally, it would be best to record them saying the correct line in the location in which it was originally recorded. If this isn't possible, try to get the person to say the correct line(s) in a controlled situation with no background sound. Then try to edit either the entire line or word into the edited video and use the ambient background audio as a second track. This may help match the sound.

You can also edit in a sound track behind the entire video, which may also help masque the new edited audio.

Buying A Digital Camera - What To Look For

Are you in the market for a new digital camera? If so, it's easy to get confused by the wide variety of makes, models, and features available on today's modern digital cameras. But don't worry! There are really only a few things to consider when buying a camera. Keep these requirements in mind while shopping and you'll end up with a camera that will give you years of quality service.

1. What Type of Camera. What type of camera do you need? Do you just want a simple "point and shoot" digital camera, or are you comfortable navigating through menus to change some basic settings? Point and shoot cameras are the easiest to use, but digital SLR (single lens reflex) cameras are far more feature-laden and can provide you with more creative control and better shot quality.

As far as prices go for the different types of cameras, here's a general rule of thumb:

- Basic "point and shoot" cameras (subcompacts and compacts) - between $ 100 - $ 300

- Advanced "point and shoot" cameras - $ 350 - $ 600

- SLR-like cameras - $ 450 - $ 1,300

- High-end SLR cameras - $ 500 up to several thousand dollars.

2. Weight, Size, and Shape. Digital SLR cameras will weigh more (and cost more) than the other types, but will shoot better quality pictures. Point-and-shoot cameras are easier to manage, but the trade-off will be lesser quality pictures.

You should be able to grip the camera comfortably. A smaller camera body is more difficult to grip properly, and all-too-many point-and-shoot cameras don't have a grip at all. If they do, it should just fill the inside curve of your fingers to fit properly.

3. User Controls. When buying a point-and-shoot type of camera, find one that you think is easy to use. The controls for setting the flash, picture resolution, exposure, and different modes (macro, automatic, etc.) should be easy to find and operate. More experienced and professional photographers like to be able to make manual adjustments, such as adjusting the aperture and shutter speed to capture fast-motion objects clearly. These capabilities may not be too important to you, though, unless you need to make those kinds of adjustments.

4. How Many Megapixels? A digital camera's megapixel rating determines the amount of fine detail that can be captured in a shot. Today's cameras can range anywhere between 2 - 12 megapixels. At the lower end, a 2 megapixel snapshot would suffice for an email or web posting. However, if you're planning on shooting photographs that may later be printed and will need to show a lot of detail, you'll probably want to move up to at least a 5 megapixel camera. At the high end, a difference of a couple of megapixels either way won't make much of a noticeable difference.

5. Optics and Responsiveness. Although the megapixel rating is important, the quality of the glass lens in the camera and how responsive the camera is overall are also important factors to consider. Quality cameras are equipped with quality lens like Sigma or Zeiss. Remember that the quality of the picture taken is a combination of the quality of the lens and the camera's digital megapixel rating.

Better digital cameras have little-to-no lag time between when you press the "shoot" button and when the image is actually captured. If you're going to be taking "action" pictures like kid activities or sporting events, this will be something to consider. Live action shots require a minimum continuous frame rate of five (i.e., 5 images captured when holding down the "shoot" button). If you purchase a camera with a slower frame rate, it will be difficult, if not impossible, to take quality action shots.

6. Zoom Lens. Optical zoom and digital zoom are the two zoom options available on today's digital cameras. Optical zoom, although more expensive, is generally considered to be superior, as it physically moves the camera's lens to zoom in on a particular subject. The alternative is digital zoom, which may very well come with a higher zoom rating. Digital zoom, though, is inferior to optical zoom because the zoom is all calculated in the camera's electronic microprocessor. Look for a camera with at least a 3power optical zoom.

7. Memory Card Format. The most popular storage card formats for digital cameras these days are SD (secure digital) cards, and you can find them in capacities of up to 32GB. For higher end SLR cameras, Compact Flash cards are generally the standard; they also come in up to 32GB sizes. Memory cards are getting cheaper every year, so don't scrimp on this type of storage for your pictures and buy some extras.

8. Battery Type and Life. A number of cameras use proprietary batteries instead of standard AA batteries. Understand that your battery will stop working some day, and hopefully not at the worst possible moment. Proprietary batteries need to be fully charged when in use, and it's always a good idea to have a fully charged backup battery close by.

Some cameras tend to consume their batteries quickly; others do not. Be sure to choose a camera that can take a large number of pictures relative to a single battery charge.

9. And Don't Forget the Accessories. Check out the accessories that generally come with all digital camera kits. If they're not included, get an extra set of batteries and a charger. You may also want to buy a card reader for your camera's memory cards. Color printers used to print your photographs are also a common add-on item.
