External data storage is now available like never before. Pfinifarina, the designers of Ferrari, helped to design the SimpleTech Signature Mini's. This device offers a smooth touch, with its velvety overlay, and its curves make it appear as a piece of art on your desk. With the SimpleTech Signature Mini (320GB, red), you not only get a local backup device, but one that synchronizes your data online as well.
The overall design, of SimpleTechs Signature Mini (320GB, red), measures around 4.9 x 3.1 x 0.7 inches and weights around 5.7 ounces. The exterior is covered with a red velvety material, making the unit nice to look at, and easy to grip. The sticker price, on this unit, is comparable to other external drives, running around $ 199.99. Additionally, overall performance is in comparison with other USB external drives. (External drives that have FireWire connectivity will obviously perform at higher standards.)
SimpleTech designed this model to run on minimal power; therefore, AC adapters are not packaged with the Signature Mini (320GB, red). Instead you get a USB 2.0 "Y" cable, which allows you to power your new unit via a USB port on your PC.
Local backup procedures are nearly seamless with the Signature Mini (320GB, red). You can, easily, set up processes that will run automatically, in the background, and take up very little resources from your PC. Additionally, users can backup up to 2GB, for free, online. (Extra storage is available, online, for a monthly fee of 4.95 a month.) You can burn, all of your backups, to CD, DVD, and Blu-Ray discs, because the Signature Mini (320GB, red) has integrated read / write technology - also allowing users to create audio and video CD's and DVD's.) This device comes with software called Joggle?. Joggle allows users to share their files, in addition to organizing and tracking. Additionally, SimpleTech has put a 3-year warranty on the Signature Mini (320GB, red).
The Signature Mini (320GB, red) arrives formatted for Windows and Vista. This does not mean; however, that the drive is not compatible with MAC computers. If you are using a MAC, you will need to reformat the drive prior to use.
SimpleTech ships only a USB 2.0 "Y" cable with the unit, as they assume that users will not need an AC adapter. However, if you are using an old computer (one that has USB 1.1 or older) you will need to purchase an adapter, as the USB port will not be able to provide enough power to the unit. In addition, some laptops do not offer enough power for this device to work; you will need to purchase AC in this case as well.
There are many new file types, available today, which are not automatically accepted, on this drive. Rather than changing the existing file types, users will have to add ones that are missing. (For example, .doc is a standard file type whereas .docx is not.)
Overall, this external drive has some, but not all of the functionality needed for true local backups (data encryption is only available online, not locally). Its overall appearance is nice for travelers and quant offices, but if you are looking for a truly secure local backup, this unit does not offer it. On the other hand, the Signature Mini does offer burning functionality for data, audio, and video, which may be an option.
