Things To Consider When Building A Smartphone App

Over the last couple of years the smart phone has gone from being the sort of gadget geeks would dream of to being a huge part of the lives of millions all over the world - "normal", non-techie people own devices such as iPhones, Blackberrys etc and they download and use many apps that add to the convenience of having a portable computer as a phone. Developers have jumped on the bandwagon and why shouldn't they? People who usually develop software and games have moved onto phones and a whole different audience to create apps.

The capabilities of the device is the first thing that you need to consider - while there are similarities between a smartphone and a computer, the phone is likely to not be able to do quite as much despite the technology improving almost constantly. For example if you are making a game, remember that the graphics are good on modern phones, however obviously nowhere near as good as on a console! Also, the interfaces on each of these devices is different, so you need to consider how people are used to using them, and make sure that the menu structure fits in with that

Look at your own capabilities and also when the app needs to be delivered if it's for a client, or how much time you allocate to it if it is your own. You will need to make sure that you have the capability in your team to program Java if you are looking at Android or Blackberry, and for iPhone either have someone with experience of that unique language or give yourself time to learn it.

On the Android app store, it is easy to get your apps online, as you don't actually have to get them approved, you can just upload one. It is completely different for Apple, who have very high standards of approval for their app store. You need to read those rules carefully and make sure the idea for the app does not contravene any of these regulations, because if it does and it is part of the fundamental idea for it, you may actually waste weeks or months on making an app that will never be accepted onto the store!

It is essential you employ software testing on your app before releasing it. Hire a team of software testers who will make sure that any bugs in your app are picked up BEFORE release, so that it creates the best possible impression of your company. Using outside testers will mean that they have no real attachment to your app, therefore be in a much better position to judge it!

Look into taking a software testing course from e-Testing if you want to do some of the testing yourself, and you will probably only need a ISEB foundation certificate in software testing for the skills to do some internal testing.
