As pop music holds the reign in the top-40 chart as the most popular genre of music, do not be fooled that classical and folk music do not live on. Opera houses, Ballet and Dance theatres, film, TV and advertising companies keep the first traditional and proper forms of music alive.
Although great composers like Beethoven, Mozart, Handel, Bach, Mendelssohn, and Vivaldi can no longer earn composition royalties, as they have been deceased for more than 70 years, record labels still produce classical albums of today's orchestras performing their brilliant compositions. On IMDB, Johann Sebastien Bach's Toccata has been re-recorded and licensed in over 86 films some of which include: The Tree of Life (2011), Smallville (2007), The Aviator, Bad Boys II, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1931). If only copyright were passed onto his descendants!
Film composers of present day but influenced by the classical are: David Foster - The Secret of My Succe$ s; Bernard Hermann - "eee eee eee" bit from Psycho (1960); Howard Shore - Lord Of The Rings; James Horner - Titanic, Maurice Jarre - A Passage To India; Danny Elfman - Batman; Hans Zimmer - Pirates of the Caribbean; Vangelis - Chariots of Fire; John; Debney - Sin City; Ennio Morricone - The Good, The Bad, The Ugly; Michael Giacchino - Star Trek; James Newton Howard - The Sixth Sense; Alan Silvestri - Forrest Gump; Patrick Doyle - Harry Potter; Basil Poledouris - Starship Troopers; John Ottman - X2; Tyler Bates - 300; Jerry Goldsmith - Star Trek; John Williams - Jaws; Henry Jackman - The Dark Knight; Harry Gregson Williams - Shrek; John Powell - Shrek; Ramin Djawadi - Iron Man; Daft Punk - Iron Man 2; Christopher Drake - Batman; Marius De Vries -Moulin Rouge; Brad Fiedel - True Lies; Klaus Bedalt - Gladiator; Alan Menken - Beauty and the Beast; Don Davis - The Matrix; Brian Tyler - The Expendables; Steve Jablonsky - Transformers.
Folk songs like 'Oh Danny Boy' and 'Silent Night' remain in the public domain. African, Celtic, Scottish, Indian, Arabic and Chinese folk are still prominent forms played and sung today. Folklore is recognized as music of the people or traditional music.
After selling over 75 million records worldwide, Irish singer Enya, has redefined folk music as new age and her compositions have frequently been licensed to films such as Far and Away, Monsters, Inc, LA Story, Green Card, The Lord of The Rings, Toys and The Age of Innocence. Her efforts have earned her 4 Oscar Awards, is the top selling soloist in Ireland and second biggest export next to U2.
The most profitable earnings of music are generated from recording and composition royalties. Even though the classical and folk eras of music no longer exist in their purest forms - without pop influence - they do still exist. Saying that it is important to remember that classical music in its time was actually called popular music. So if anything classical exists in every pop music piece as that was its very source. So next time you hear Lady Gaga, her synth crescendo and melodrama, it may just take you back in time.
