There is a lot more to the computer than many of us realize. Many of us only use it for the very basic like checking our emails playing games, surfing the net, writing letters, playing our mp3's, making slide-shows or watching a movie. But the machines in front of us are so much more.
You really are able to do so many great things, especially if your computer was made in the past few years. Many of these things don't cost a cent, but you can make your machine do completely new things just by downloading some freeware or open source software.
If you have a web camera, and many computers come with them built in now, one of the things you might already have tried, and if you have not you really should, is using Skype. You can have a video chat (or just audio) with a friend or relative who has Skype too no matter where they are in the world and its completely free. It can also make calls to regular phones, and these calls cost a fraction of the regular price. If you have family overseas and don't have a web camera, it is definitely a worthwhile purchase.
The camera and mic can be used for many other things. Pod-casts are becoming very popular, and if you have not watched or listened to any, search for a few or go look on the itunes store where they are free. But why not make your own? With that mic and camera you could make your own tv show, or even a radio show. In fact you could also try make a whole internet radio station, with a lot of free software dedicated to the craze. Or if writing is more your thing, you could just blog weekly and who knows where it may lead.
You can now use incredibly video editing software on almost any computer. Many systems even come with their own free one, and these are normally very easy to work. This is a great way to re-package all your old home videos, adding sound effects and titles, and in no time you will feel like a Hollywood pro. Whether it be a wedding, a first birthday, or just a holiday, an edited home movie can be a really special present for family or friends.
If you have dreams of being a rock star, well your computer can be transformed into a music studio. You can attach an instrument or microphone and record your own music, or you can download a program where you can make music, most also offer very good tutorials on how to use them. If you have no knowledge of playing any musical instrument, you can solve that problem too, by turning your computer into your guitar teacher, or whatever instrument you want to play. There are many sites and programs where you can learn how to play, and in a program on the Mac like Garage Band, you can actually download free video lessons directly.
But there really are very few limits to what you can do on your computer, and you will find software for just about any hobby, so get searching and make your machine more than it is today.
